There are many skin conditions that affect the foot and ankle. The skin is the bodies largest organ!
Any skin condition that arises on the rest of the body can also be seen on the foot. Some of the most common conditions that we treat on the foot are plantar warts, athlete’s foot infections, eczema, psoriasis, bacterial infections, suspicious lesions and nail infections.
Plantar warts are a virus that develop due to contact from an infected surface. We treat these with prescriptive topical medications, surgical excision as well as oral medications. A definitive biopsy may be needed for a suspicious lesion on the foot to determine the correct diagnosis.
Athlete’s feet arise from a fungus infection caused by a multitude of factors but are very commonly seen in the foot. We treat these with topical or oral antifungals and may take a biopsy. Nails can also get infected with fungus. We take a comprehensive approach to clearing your toenail infections with many treatment options available.
As part of a comprehensive approach to all dermatologic / skin conditions we may biopsy or take scrapings of a skin lesion or infected toenail.
It is important to keep your feet dry and avoid lotions between your toes but clean them daily. Soaking your feet can cause dryness as it removes all of the natural oils you produce so it is important to moisturize afterward. Don’t forget to put sunscreen on your feet when you go out in the sun!
Bacterial infections or cellulitis of the skin either associated with a foreign body or nail infection are common. They need to be evaluated by our doctors for appropriate treatment which could include oral or topical antibiotics.
